Observations on “Nonradiating Surface Sources”

چکیده
The proof, established in a recent paper (A.J. Devaney, “Nonradiating surface sources”, J. Opt. Soc. Am. A, Vol. 21, 2216-2222, 2004), of existence of nonradiating surface sources formed by singlet plus doublet components whose generated fields vanish in either of the regions separated by a closed or infinite surface where the source resides is corroborated by means of an equivalent but slightly different formalism based on treatment of partial differential operators in a weak derivative or distributional sense. This approach yields a construction procedure applicable to a broad class of singular nonradiating sources. A fundamental question raised in that paper concerning the nonexistence of non-trivial nonradiating infinite planar sources that generate vanishing fields at both associated half-spaces is re-examined, with the conclusion that it is actually possible to mathematically construct such singular nonradiating sources so long as one enables higher-order singularities such as certain combinations of singlet and triplet components.

The class of three-dimensional (3D) nonradiating sources to the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation is generalized to include nonradiating surface sources that are localized on closed or infinite surfaces sigma and that generate no radiation throughout one of the two space regions whose common boundary is sigma. The class of non-radiating surface sources is shown to be identical to the class of so...
متن کاملA new method for specifying nonradiating, monochromatic, scalar sources and their fields
As is well known, the subject of nonradiating source distributions is intimately related to questions concerning the uniqueness of various wave-theoretic inverse problems.' In spite of this fact, no general technique appears to have been developed so far for specifying all nonradiating sources that can be associated with a given source domain. Moreover, relatively little is known about fields t...
متن کاملDescription of random radiating and nonradiating sources
An alternative description of spatially localized random nonradiating sources is derived, for any degree of spatial-temporal coherence. A description of a complementary class of random sources (purely radiating sources) that lacks a nonradiating part is also obtained.
متن کاملInverse source problem with regularity constraints: normal solution and nonradiating source components
The use of regularity constraints in formulating the scalar inverse source problem (ISP) is investigated. Two kinds of regularity constraints are considered: compact supportness in a given source region, and normal differentiability on the boundary of that region. Normal solutions (minimum L2 norm solutions) to the ISP for square-integrable (L2) scalar sources with and without the above-mention...
متن کاملNonradiating and Minimum Energy Sources and Their Fields: Generalized Source Inversion Theory and Applications
A new general framework for characterizing scalar and electromagnetic (EM) nonradiating (NR) and minimum energy (ME) sources and their fields is developed that is of interest for both radiation and source reconstruction problems. NR sources are characterized in connection with the concept of reciprocity as nonreceptors. Localized ME sources are shown to be free fields truncated within the sourc...
